Your WordPress Website is Under Attack.
Here's How to Protect it.

You have four choices, and one is free.

Protect Your WordPress Website

Hackers love to target WordPress websites.

As the most widely-used website platform on the planet, WordPress offers many benefits. It is stable, easy to use and offers truly amazing functionality.

I love to design and develop in WordPress; in fact, I can't recall the last website I built using a different technology.

The downside is that due to its popularity, hackers are attracted to WordPress websites. Interestingly, they don't want your images or info; they're typically after the computing power your website uses so they can send out spam and malware (see "More Information" below).

But that doesn't mean you are helpless when it comes to protecting your site. You have four choices.

This is for you if your own a WordPress website.

The info below is NOT for you if your website was built with HTML (like all of my sites were until I got into WordPress), Drupal or is hosted on a platform like Shopify, Squarespace, or Etsy.

  • Your business or organization depends in large part on your website. Your website is the place people go look to see if you have the services or products that they need. Investing in its maintenance is like changing the oil in your car and keeping air in your tires.
  • Whether your website is a simple one-pager or is the home to a super popular blog or is a complex e-commerce website, uptime is crucial.
  • You're a small business owner, an artist, author or work for a non-profit. You may be aware of security risks associated with your website, but you wouldn't be alone if you don't know what the options are or what the costs may be.

Here are Your Four Choices:

Option 1: Do nothing. Most of my clients have never had an issue with hacking, so you could see if your luck runs in that direction. As a courtesy, I have added a free security plugin to many of my clients' sites and I'm getting notifications about regular illicit login attempts. Most of these hackers aren't getting in, but If your site does get hacked, it'll take time and funds to fix ... and that's why this isn't the free choice.

Option 2: Do it yourself. You can learn how to make regular local and cloud backups, as well as the proper way to update the core WordPress software, theme and plugins. You'll also need to know what to do if something goes wrong. Plugins and the core WP software don't always play nicely together, so knowing what to do after an ill-fated update is advised. This is the free choice (if you don't consider your time to learn as a cost).

Option 3: Hire an online service. There are a number of companies and individuals out there that will be happy to take care of your WordPress website maintenance and security needs. I'm sure many of them would be fine choices.

Option 4: Use our Bald Guy Studio Website Maintenance and Security Service. If you'd prefer to use a reliable company that you may already know (did we build your WordPress website?), then check out the features below. Hiring us will mean you won't be relying on luck, you won't have to learn how to do maintenance and security on your own, and you won't have to research and hire a company you know nothing about.

More Info on Our Features

Regular Full Backups

Your hosting company backs up your files and data, but they're probably not liable if your data is lost. You should have your own backups. We prefer redundancy.

WordPress Software Updates

The folks who created WordPress release regular security and functionality updates. Your website needs these to remain safe. What version of WP is your site on now?

Plugin Updates

Plugin developers are independent. Their products are not guaranteed to work together, and conflicts happen. We'll handle updates for you, and test afterwards.

Theme Updates

The theme is the template that governs your website's design and functionality. It's advisable to keep your theme updated periodically to take advantage of new features and security.

Security Protection

We use a plugin that blocks brute force attacks and keeps a watchful eye on all traffic on your website. We will be alerted when something needs attention and will fix it.

Reports

Do you know what pages your visitors are most interested in or what search terms they're using? We'll send your Google Analytics and other key reports depending on your plan.

Bonus: Minor Updates

On the Pro Plan, we'll be available to make one or two small updates for you such as swapping out a bit of text, changing a photo or going over a how-to as part of our service.

More Information

Check out What Hackers Do With Compromised WordPress Sites. A survey by the same company showed hackers get in mostly via plugins and brute force attacks.
